Hi Heather,
Sarnia has a “closed-shop” policy for moving into the prevention division, meaning you have to be a member of the fire service, and the candidate is taken from a list which is based on seniority.
Once in the division, you require to take all the courses that are part of NFPA 1031-1 and 1031-2, including the Fire Code courses; NFPA 1033 and “Fire Protection” from OBOA to become a Captain in the division. After that you require 1021-3 and 1021-4 for Chief Fire Prevention Officer. Multiple Captains are possible (even all members), but there will be only one CFPO. A new CFPO will be the most senior Captain.
Hope this helps
Roel
