I am hoping to find out what different departments have for a promotional process for Fire Prevention.
I was able to look up CA’s from Cambridge, Waterloo, Kitchener, Brampton, Mississauga and Kingston.
There seems to be more departments leaning towards a multi-part process to be eligible for promotion from Prevention officer to supervisor (Captain or Assistant Division Chief). Combining written, oral, interview, presentation or evaluation panel together rather then one written test.
Sarnia has a “closed-shop” policy for moving into the prevention division, meaning you have to be a member of the fire service, and the candidate is taken from a list which is based on seniority.
Once in the division, you require to take all the courses that are part of NFPA 1031-1 and 1031-2, including the Fire Code courses; NFPA 1033 and “Fire Protection” from OBOA to become a Captain in the division. After that you require 1021-3 and 1021-4 for Chief Fire Prevention Officer. Multiple Captains are possible (even all members), but there will be only one CFPO. A new CFPO will be the most senior Captain.
Hope this helps
