Hi all, Duncan we utilize the blue but I’d make a quick trip to the local POA court with book in hand if you’re at all uncertain.

    Hi Karen and all,

Aside from comments already provided, invoicing seems to do the “trick” on these sorts of issues. Has the responsibility of implementing controls (even so far as tenancy termination) on the owners. Always seems people start to really think of things when the invoice arrives.

    My two cents.

    Hi Gary et al,

Burlington until now has operated with generally never leaving a home without protection and installing smoke alarms on each floor level where found missing. We are curving in an opposite direction (with now CO and costs per unit) and that is not installing on responses where there is not a smoke alarm installed / disabled etc. The crew would direct the owner to comply and provide 48 hours. The crew would do the initial re-attendance and non-compliance would be forwarded to FP for enforcement (a ticket in all likelihood). Saying this, the SOG will be provided so that the Captain (possibly in having to confer with the PC) will always maintain the discretion as to conduct an installation. A good case example is teenaged children and the folks are away for the week-end – you would hope we can assist on a response on the installation and are not policy bound.

Gary, shoot me an e-mail directly and I can send you the SOG (or draft thereof).

Hi Brent, I would rely on the information both presented by the person(s) you are dealing with (did they identify self as owner, present a business license, liquor license etc indicating ‘owner’ information) and as per municipal tax roll. If pursuing charges, then would do both a Corporation Profile Report (if corporation involved) and a title search.

    Hi all,

In Burlington we post all Inspection Orders on all buildings. Saying this, we still use Inspection Reports in some instances and these are not posted – generally served and / or sent regular mail.

Hey all, good conversation for sure Vince.

In Burlington we do have a Standard Operating Guideline (SOG) on notes. Vince, I will send you same. It is for Captains and A/Captains in suppression. Saying this, notes are inconsistent at best in terms of practice.

As Inspectors we all do some degree of notetaking. Most just document the specifics of an inspection or violations noted, while based on my own experiences I work my note-book similar to that of policing – on duty, weather conditions, Platoon, date etc. I document my day based on my activities, inspections and observations made. The suppression SOG is also structured this way. With us using AMANDA, I then have to transcribe some of the basics (whether violation, order issued etc.) in tracking the basic progress of my activities. I avoid making two separate notes as I’ve always been taught not to duplicate duty notes. My AMANDA reference is simply in tracking progress / status etc., my notes are in gathering the facts.
In answer to your questions (ones I don’t think I answered above):

    1. Most do, although not consistent. I would always recommend a actual note book (Triform or otherwise) be utilized as otherwise one is deviating from accepted rules of notetaking – consistency, numbered pages, not being able to remove pages etc.
    2. Some do. Again, not a bound book. Could present some issues in always ensuring said notes are kept (most that keep a notebook can refer back years as to the events in their notebook)
    3. Don’t do investigations (FP)
