In Haldimand our drills are done during the day. At times some vulnerable occupancies have used proxies to assist in the drill. It is important that I follow all safety regulations when it comes to staff and especially making sure residents are performing in a safe matter. It is essential for me to make sure that staff primarily working nights with the least amount of staff on hand participate in the fire drill. I know they can perform the drill with day staff due to the fact the levels double with staff. If we can not do it during the day with night staff then arrangements will be made to do it during early evening with the night staff come in to work. I will do almost anything to accommodate them but it has to be done. I will not sign off or approve a fire drill scenario if it doesn’t meet guidelines of minimal staff which is always at night. This is not only a requirement of the fire code but the Ministry of Health when doing an audited or require accreditation their can be no issues with the Fire Dept. I would agree with Jeff and we do much the same. Hope this helps Robert.

    Hi Robert,

I haven’t had a problem here in Haldimand with vulnerable occupancies fire drill scenario’s and approving them. But if I did the route I would take is to remind them they are in contravention of the fire code. Present them with an “order” referencing 2.8.3.2.(6) , provide a date to complete. If not start litigation.

I received my letter from the OFC from Doug before he left. I must add, I had to personally send him emails and many at that to get my letter

Gary, Haldimand County provides one loner smoke alarm. We do not use tape, the smoke alarm bracket is screwed in. The loner must be replaced and we have a smoke alarm waiver form that is filled out.

Roel, I think it would all depend on the size of this heater and how much meat was being cooked. As stated in NFPA 96 4.1.1.”Cooking equipment used in processes producing smoke or grease-laden vapours shall be equipped with an exhaust system that complies with all the equipment and performance requirements of this standard”. It also states 4.1.1.1 ” Cooking equipment that has been listed in accordance with ANSI/ULC 197 or an equivalent standard for reduced emissions shall not be required to be provided with an exhaust system. Due to the fact it is not open and is closed makes it somewhat of a dilema. I would check to see if there are any labels on this equipment. You have to determine the amount of vapours escaping once the doors are open. I definitely would ask for a K extinguisher available. Good luck and please keep us posted with the outcome.

Scott in Haldimand we have had corn mazes but no hay maze. Prior to my arrival here the corn maze was required to to have in place approved provisions such as signage, extingushers and emergency exits out from the maze.
