Overview of Training:

Addressing Fire Safety in Hoarded Homes

The training session will focus on evidence-based tools to be used in the diagnoses and mitigations of hoarded homes – with particular emphasis on fire safety. Attendees will learn about accepted methods of addressing hoarding in homes whereby mitigations can be put into place in order to reduce fire occurrences, injuries and deaths. The approach of other agency collaborations being key will be emphasized, along with accepted wording for use in Inspection Orders that have been upheld by the Fire Marshal’s Office and Fire Safety Commission of Orders that were contested.

Presenter Bio:

Tony Sabatini is the Chief of Fire Prevention with the Guelph Fire Department. His work is focused on leading a Bureau of 6 Fire Prevention Officers in their roles as fire inspectors, fire investigators and as public fire and life safety educators. In the past 4 years, he has been involved in a federally-granted study on Hoarding where he was teamed with University of British Columbia professors to address Hoarding and fire safety . His work with these professionals and others in the field have led to a new tool developed to be used in Canada and the USA to complement already available resources to effectively deal with hoarding  -especially with respect ot fire safety.
