The Captain of Public Education, under the direction of the Assistant Chief, Fire Prevention and Life Safety, will oversee and assist with the development and delivery of targeted public education messaging to the residents of Mississauga.
In this position, the Captain will be responsible for the activities, training, development and direction of all Public Education Officers or personnel assigned to the public education section and provide reports to the Assistant Chief on public education activities.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervises the activities of assigned staff including staff training, assigning and reviewing assignments and daily workflow and evaluates performance through staff appraisals.
- Supervises employee relations issues including conducting meetings with employees and complete proper documentation.
- Co-ordinate and facilitates departmental involvement in TAPP-C (The Arson Prevention Program- Children),
- Recommend creation of new educational programs and activities where and when required,
- Oversee the development and delivery of new educational programs,
- Records, maintains, summarizes and reports monthly and annual statistics and activity reports,
- Work with the City’s Communication Division and other approved media outlets to disseminate fire and life safety information in an approved format to residents and businesses of Mississauga,
- Review and maintain public education information on department web page,
- Establish and/or maintain an excellent and productive working relationship with, but not limited to, Boards of Education, private schools, members of community groups, members of culturally diverse groups, Fire Suppression personnel,
- Review periodic risk assessments of the community using the approved methodology and evaluates current public education programming to ensure public education messaging is addressing those risks,
- Liaise with the news media to increase public awareness of fire/life safety hazards and plan special events to promote fire/life safety.
- Prepares monthly public education events calendar to be provided to the Assistant Chief, Fire Prevention and Life Safety on the last day of the preceding month,
- Prepares a monthly report to the Assistant Chief, Fire Prevention & Life Safety on public education events and programing has targeted community risks.
- Ensures obligations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and other applicable legislation are met.
- Evaluates and recommends staff for promotion and participates in the selection of new staff
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Skills and Qualifications
- Post-secondary graduation from a university, technical or community college in a related discipline or equivalent.
- Certified as a Public Fire and Life Safety Educator, Level II, NFPA 1035.
- A minimum of five years of solid experience in the development and delivery of presentations, training and public speaking.
- Must have the ability to research, develop, coordinate and deliver Fire/Life Safety education programs utilizing the principles of adult education while employing various techniques and methods of delivery.
- The successful candidate should have a general knowledge of: the Ontario Building Code, Ontario Fire Code, NFPA, ULC, CSA, and other applicable codes, standards and regulations related to fire protection; the general operational aspects of fire protection and life safety systems including, but not limited to, fire alarm, voice communication, sprinkler, hose and standpipe, emergency lighting and power, fire pumps, water supply and fire suppression systems, fire fighters’ elevators, smoke control measures, the storage, use and handling of dangerous goods, hazardous processes and activities, storage configurations of commodities, as well as building construction and occupant types.
- Must have provided excellent customer service and communicated effectively.
- Must be willing to take required training courses which may be off site and out of City.
- Must have a valid Ontario Drivers licence (min. Class G) with a satisfactory driving record and be willing to use own vehicle (mileage allowance provided),
- Excellent interpersonal skills are required with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, internal and external clients.
Hourly Rate/Salary: $119,326 – $128,351
