This course has previously been given in co-operation with the following OMBA chapters (Wellington Waterloo District, Grand Erie Chapter, South Western Chapter, Sun Parlour Chapter and the Ottawa Building Department) and attendance has included fire department personnel.

The material covers the essentials of fire alarm systems that are in the majority of buildings in every municipality.

A comprehensive supporting handbook has been developed specifically for this course.

The course is particularly beneficial to Fire Prevention Officers who:

  • Review fire alarm plans and specifications for new construction,
  • Review fire alarm plans and specifications for building additions or retrofit,
  • Conduct fire alarm site inspections or verification,
  • Review documentation for building occupancy.

Course Description 

This two day course provides an introduction to fire alarm systems and references to the Building Code and CAN/ULC S524 The Standard for the Installation of Fire Alarm Systems.

The basic and state of the art subjects include: fire detection devices, sprinkler interface, alarm signals, control units and operations, annunciators, addressable fire alarm systems, data fault isolators, system verification and knowing what to look for in acceptance of fire alarm systems.

The Instructor

Dave Goodyear has an extensive background in fire alarm systems from system design and twenty years with the Office of the Fire Marshal to knowledge of the latest legislation and ULC standards
