Fire (Prevention) Inspector – Posting No. 201936

The Halton Hills Fire Department is accepting applications for the position of Fire (Prevention) Inspector.  The Fire (Prevention) Inspector will provide public education, promote, interpret, and enforce applicable fire safety codes, standards and legislation, ensuring buildings and properties are in compliance with the Ontario Fire Code, Ontario Building Code and relevant municipal by-laws.  Following the Department policies and objective guidelines, the Fire (Prevention) Inspector will exercise due diligence while executing assigned tasks under the supervision of Administration or other supervisory staff.

Primary Functions:

  • Promote interpret and enforce applicable safety codes, standards and legislation ensuring compliance with the Ontario Fire Code, the Ontario Building Code, FPPA, ULC, CSA & other applicable codes, standards, regulations and municipal by-laws
  • Conduct Fire & Life Safety Inspections
  • Conduct inspections under municipal by-laws
  • Conduct fire investigations related to origin and cause
  • Evaluate, approve and enforce Fire Safety Plans
  • Assist in the development and delivery of public education programs
  • Inspect and test fire protection systems
  • Perform plans reviews
  • Prepare relative reports, records, statistics and correspondence
  • Assist and support operations based fire crews at emergency incidents in a non-suppression role
  • Initiates and participates in the prosecution of offenders of fire safety legislation
  • Provide technical support and training for fire department personnel
  • Perform administrative duties
  • Act as an assistant to the Fire Marshal under the provisions of the Fire Protection and Prevention Act (FPPA)
  • Liaise with fire protection professionals
  • Responsible to work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, the Town of Halton Hills Health and Safety policy and procedures, as well as any established industry guidelines
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to read, interpret and apply relevant legislation and regulations
  • Basic understanding of emergency response operations including basic equipment and fire suppression techniques
  • High level of oral and written communication skills including knowledge and skills related to computer applications
  • Able to instruct and educate

Mandatory Qualifications:

  • Must possess a post-secondary education in Fire Protection, Building Construction, Architecture, Engineering, or equivalent, as established by the Ontario Ministry of Education
  • Ontario College Advanced Diploma in Fire Protection Engineering Technology, or equivalent
  • Must be qualified as an NFPA Fire Inspector I and II
  • Must be qualified as a Public Life Fire Safety Educator (NFPA 1035)
  • Must be qualified as a NFPA Fire Investigator (NFPA 1033 & 921). Certified Fire & Explosion Investigator in accordance with NFPA 921 or able to be certified within one year of employment
  • Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid unrestricted Ontario Driver’s License, minimum class G. Applicants with more than six demerit points are ineligible for consideration
  • Must possess current First Aid and CPR certifications

Salary Range

The wage/salary is 108% of a first class firefighter rate and is dependent upon qualifications and experience.  The first class firefighter rate is $100,698 (2019 rate).
