Forensic Fire Protection Engineer

What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role, you will:

• conduct complex forensic investigations at fires and explosions across Ontario, working as part of a multi-disciplinary team with other ministries, agencies, and fire and police services
• provide technical advice and assistance on the application of legislation, regulations, codes and standards (e.g., Fire Protection and Prevention Act (FPPA), Fire Code, etc.) which relate to fire safety
• develop technical reports on a variety of fire safety-related matters where engineering expertise is required
• assess the impact and effectiveness of Fire Code requirements and assist in the development of submissions and recommendations to government for revisions to the Fire Code
• represent the Office of the Fire Marshal on internal and external technical committees

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• You are a Professional Engineer, licensed with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).
• You must have a valid class ‘G’ driver’s licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid driver’s licence upon being hired.
• You must be able to travel frequently throughout the province, often for overnight stays.

Technical expertise:

You have:

• knowledge of the theories, principles and practices of at least one of the engineering disciplines, such as chemical, mechanical, electrical or civil engineering, with specialization in fire dynamics
• knowledge of fire science, fire chemistry, fire/explosion dynamics, thermometry, thermochemistry, thermodynamics, failure analysis and analytical tools, hazardous materials, and fire investigative and forensic techniques and methodologies
• knowledge of federal, provincial and municipal government structure and operations related to fire safety
• in-depth knowledge of fire safety-related legislation, regulations, codes, standards and their application as well as a general knowledge of the Criminal Code, Canada Evidence Act and legal and courtroom procedures
• sound knowledge of fire dynamics, including the consequences of fires
• proficiency with computers, common office productivity software and a variety of applications, including fire and explosion modelling, still and video image editing

Communication and interpersonal skills:

You have:

• proven communication skills to provide expert testimony in court, and briefings, presentations and technical advice and assistance to the ministry, government, municipalities, stakeholder groups and the public
• written communication skills to develop technical reports, articles, communiques, training materials, and materials in support of making amendments to existing regulations or development of new legislation, regulations, codes and standards
• relationship management and interpersonal skills to liaise with all levels of government officials, other governments, municipalities and stakeholders; to participate in technical committees; and to establish and maintain positive relationships with public safety partners

Analytical and investigative skills:

You have research, analytical, and investigative skills to:

• gather and assess information, identify relevant issues and prepare reports that set out your findings
• perform quality assurance audits and compliance monitoring
• identify relevant public safety issues and risks, and recommend solutions
• conduct research to develop solutions to unique situations

Project management:

You have:

• knowledge of project management methodologies and techniques to provide technical and engineering advice and assistance on issues related to fire safety on projects
• the ability to plan projects, recommend resource requirements, and ensure deadlines are met

Salary Range: $87,125 – $130,681 Per Year
