In partnership with the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council (FMPFSC) and with support of the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs (OAFC), Environics Analytics (a leading market research firm), and Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) the Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management (OFMEM) is pleased to announce a series of regional hands-on workshops focused on public fire safety education.

Environics Analytics has recently worked with the City of London, Ontario to move away from “one-size-fits-all” public education programs and campaigns, to a more customized, targeted, and evidence-based strategy. With limited resources, fire services can then focus their efforts on those most in need of fire safety information, using the right messages, timing, locations, and “channels”. To lead off these hands-on working sessions, Environics Analytics will, by example, present a comprehensive analysis of fire loss and demographic data for each of the host municipalities to demonstrate the value of this information in developing and implementing effective public fire safety education programs and initiatives. Participants will then work through a process to analyze and apply their own community-specific information/data and develop a take-away public education plan using social marketing techniques to advance public education strategies that effectively target local fire concerns and audiences.

TSSA will be lending expertise to these sessions based on their experience in applying social marketing techniques to address public safety issues related to the sectors it regulates.  Dave Lisle, Director, Research and Education, will present a case study that focuses on carbon monoxide, to demonstrate how social marketing is applied to successfully enhance public safety behaviours. As well, TSSA will be available to assist workshop participants as they formulate their public education strategies.

These regional workshops are designed for members of your department who are involved in direct oversight and/or delivery of public fire safety education. Participation is limited to a maximum of two (2) registrants per department.
