InactiveHello Everyone,
I was wondering if departments could share how there ” On Call ” works for their respective departments.
1. Does the fire prevention staff rotate On Call
2. Call out criteria for the suppression staff
3.Time period that the fire prevention staff is On Call ( it is for 7 days 7 am Monday till 7 am Monday in PTBO)
4. The compensation for the fire prevention staff for the On Call time. ( even if you are not called in )
5. Is there a min time for getting called on the phone for advice.
6. From the time you receive a call for investigation, what is the expected time frame for you to arrive.Thank you for your input,
Howie

ParticipantIn Perth, we are a one-hall volunteer dept. The Chief and I (as FPO) are the only full-time staff. Separate from my FPO duties, I’m also part of the suppression crew. Due to our typical call volume and type (our last true structure fire was June 2017 just before I started), either the Chief will deal with it after hours or it waits until the next business day for me and/or him.
1. Does the fire prevention staff rotate On Callย No
2. Call out criteria for the suppression staffย I’ll already likely be there as part of the suppression crew

ModeratorHi Howie,
In Richmond Hill we have no prevention staff on call. They used to call any of the 4 people on the Fire Investigation Unit to see who was available. There was no compensation for being on call other then overtime if called in, but there was no expectation to report if you were unavailable. That system didn’t work.ย We proposed having an on-call list that would cover 24/7/365, and the person on call would be compensated with one hour of overtime for every day on call. This proposal was refused by management. Now if it is determined that the FIU are required on a scene during non work hours 0700-1730 Monday to Friday ,the scene will have to be held until an FIU member reports during working hours.

ParticipantOurs is very similar to Richmond Hill’s current no on-call, and Vince is right, it doesn’t work. For a while, management approved to call in overtime suppression staff to hold the scene overnight, until one of our two investigators could attend in daylight, but that has since been taken off the table. Discussions aplenty, no solutions as of yet…
